Other Directory Listings

This page is a private reference for Dr. Finnick. It is not linked anywhere on the site. Complete the Google Business Profile and Apple Maps guides first, then work through these in order.

Why multiple listings matter

Google and Apple Maps are the two most important places to appear, but patients research health providers in many places. Some people go straight to Psychology Today when looking for a psychologist. Others use Bing search or Bing Maps. Some check Yelp or Healthgrades before calling. Being listed consistently across these platforms also signals to Google that your business is legitimate — which helps your Google ranking.

The most important rule: use the exact same business name, address, and phone number everywhere. Inconsistencies between listings confuse Google and can hurt your search ranking.

1. Bing Places for Business — Free

Bing is Microsoft's search engine. Fewer people use it than Google, but a Bing Places listing takes about 10 minutes and feeds your information into Bing Maps and Microsoft Copilot — an AI assistant that many people use to find local businesses. The best part: you can import your Google Business Profile directly, so most of the work is already done.

Steps

  1. Go to bingplaces.com.
  2. You need a Microsoft account to sign in. This is a free account similar to a Google account. If you use Outlook email, Xbox, or Skype, you already have one. If not, click "Sign up" on the sign-in page and create one with any email address.
  3. Once signed in, look for the option that says "Import from Google." If your Google Business Profile is already verified and live, clicking this will pull in your business name, address, phone, website, hours, and photos automatically. Review and confirm everything looks correct.
  4. If the import option is not available or your Google listing is not yet live, enter your information manually using the details from the table above.
  5. Bing may ask you to verify by phone call to (530) 606-5168 or by postcard. The phone call is faster.

2. Psychology Today — $29.95 per month

Psychology Today is the single most important directory for a mental health or psychology practice. It is where patients specifically go to find a therapist or psychologist — not just a general web search. It appears at the top of Google results for therapy-related searches the vast majority of the time, and nearly a million people browse it every week in the United States alone.

The monthly cost is $29.95 with no long-term contract — you can cancel any time. Given the volume of patients who use this directory specifically, it pays for itself quickly if even one patient per year finds you through it.

Steps

  1. Go to join.psychologytoday.com/us/signup.
  2. Fill in your license type (Psychologist / PsyD), license number, and the state where you are licensed (California). Psychology Today verifies all listings against state licensing boards, so you cannot skip this step.
  3. Enter your name: Dr. John Finnick, PsyD, LEP
  4. Enter your practice name: Tahoe Neurofeedback
  5. Enter the address, phone, and website from the table above.
  6. You will be asked to write a profile statement — a short description of your practice and approach, written in first or third person. This is what potential patients read to decide whether to contact you. Use the draft below as a starting point:

Draft profile statement — edit as you see fit:

I am a licensed educational psychologist and EEG neurofeedback specialist with over 30 years of clinical experience. I founded Tahoe Neurofeedback to bring high-quality, individually guided brain training to adults, adolescents, and children in the North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Truckee region. My practice focuses on EEG neurofeedback — a non-invasive, drug-free approach that trains the brain toward more stable, efficient patterns. I work with clients who are experiencing ADHD, anxiety, sleep difficulties, trauma-related symptoms, depression, chronic pain, and those pursuing peak performance goals. Every session is guided in real time using quantitative EEG monitoring. Protocols are tailored to your individual brain patterns — not a standard template. I also offer Brain Map (QEEG) assessment for clients who benefit from a detailed neurophysiological picture before training begins. My work is grounded in 30+ years of hands-on clinical experience, including long-term collaboration with a psychiatric clinic and extensive school-based psychological assessment. I am a Board Member of the Foundation for Neurofeedback and Applied Neuroscience.

  1. Fill in the Issues or Specialties section. Select all that apply from the list — commonly: ADHD, Anxiety, Chronic Pain, Depression, Learning Disabilities, Neurofeedback, Sleep, Trauma and PTSD.
  2. Under Client focus, select: Children (6–10), Preteens (11–13), Teenagers (14–18), Adults, and Elders (65+) — or whichever age groups you see.
  3. Under Finances / Insurance: indicate that you do not accept insurance (self-pay), and note that HSA and FSA cards are accepted.
  4. Add a photo — a clear, professional headshot works best. Profiles with photos get significantly more views.
  5. Enter your credit card information to start the $29.95/month subscription. You will not be charged until your profile is reviewed and approved, which typically takes a day or two.

3. ChoosingTherapy.com — Free

ChoosingTherapy.com is a free therapist directory with over 35 million annual readers. It takes about 15 minutes to set up and requires no credit card.

Steps

  1. Go to directory.choosingtherapy.com/for-providers.
  2. Click "Get Listed Free" and create an account with your email address.
  3. Fill in your name, credentials, practice name, address, phone, and website using the details from the table at the top of this page.
  4. Add a short bio (you can use a condensed version of the Psychology Today draft above), your specialties, and a photo.
  5. ChoosingTherapy verifies provider credentials before publishing. You may be asked to confirm your license number.

4. Healthgrades — Free

Healthgrades is a widely used healthcare provider directory. It likely already has a basic listing for Dr. Finnick based on California licensing data — claiming it lets you add your website, correct the address, and add a photo.

Steps

  1. Go to healthgrades.com and search for John Finnick in California.
  2. If you find your listing, scroll to the bottom and look for "Is this your profile? Claim it." or similar wording.
  3. Follow the claim process — Healthgrades typically verifies by sending an email to an address associated with your license, or by phone.
  4. Once claimed, update your address, phone, website, and add a photo and practice description.
  5. If no listing exists, you can create one by clicking "Add yourself to Healthgrades" on the main page.

5. Yelp — Free (basic)

Yelp is commonly used for health and wellness businesses. A free basic listing is all you need — do not pay for Yelp advertising unless you have a specific reason to. Yelp also feeds some business data into Apple Maps, so having an accurate Yelp listing can reinforce your Apple Maps presence.

A note about Yelp: Yelp is aggressive about calling businesses to sell advertising after you claim a listing. You can politely decline — a free listing is all you need here. Do not feel pressured to buy ads.

Steps

  1. Go to biz.yelp.com.
  2. Search for Tahoe Neurofeedback or your address. If a listing already exists, click "Claim this business." If not, click "Add your business to Yelp."
  3. Create a Yelp account using your email address (or sign in if you already have one).
  4. Verify ownership — Yelp typically calls (530) 606-5168 with a code, or sends a verification email.
  5. Once verified, fill in your business name, address, phone, website, hours, and a short description. Use the details from the table at the top of this page.
  6. Add at least one photo — the office exterior or interior works well.

Your listing checklist

Use this to track your progress. Each listing takes 10–30 minutes. Complete them one at a time — there is no rush, but Google Business Profile and Apple Maps should come first.
