Costs & payment

Does the practice bill insurance?

No. This is a fee-for-service practice and does not bill insurance directly. Past attempts to work within the insurance system resulted in significant unpaid claims and administrative burden that took focus away from patient care. Detailed receipts are provided upon request if you wish to submit for out-of-network reimbursement yourself.

Can I use an HSA or FSA card?

Yes. Health Savings Account (HSA) and Flexible Spending Account (FSA) cards are accepted. A detailed receipt is provided for your records.

What does a neurofeedback training session cost?

Neurofeedback training sessions are $180 per hour. Session length is discussed at your first visit and tailored to your needs.

What does a Brain Map cost?

A Brain Map (Quantitative EEG assessment using the Brainmaster system) is $1,200. Not every patient needs a Brain Map; Dr. Finnick recommends it when a detailed view of your brain's electrical patterns would meaningfully guide training design.

The sessions

What does Dr. Finnick do during a training session?

While you watch the screen and listen to the feedback signal, Dr. Finnick monitors your EEG in real time on a separate display. He observes which frequencies are appearing where, how they shift as you engage or relax, and how your brain responds to small adjustments in the training parameters. He is not simply starting a program and leaving the room — he is actively making decisions throughout the session about thresholds, sensor placement, and training targets. That moment-to-moment judgment is what shapes your individualized protocol over time.

What should I wear to a session?

Wear comfortable clothing. Sensors are placed on the scalp with a conductive paste or solution. Hair should be accessible (avoid heavy products or tight styles that restrict access to the scalp). The paste washes out easily with water.

How many sessions will I need?

Course length varies depending on your goals, starting patterns, and how consistently you train. Dr. Finnick sets expectations after your initial consultation and first assessment. Many clients attend sessions over several weeks to months. Progress is evaluated along the way and the plan is adjusted accordingly.

Is neurofeedback safe?

EEG neurofeedback is non-invasive. Sensors read your brain's electrical activity and software provides feedback based on it. Nothing is injected into your brain and no electrical current is introduced. Discuss your medical history and any relevant conditions with Dr. Finnick at your initial visit.

Logistics

Do I need a referral to make an appointment?

No formal referral is required to contact the practice. Many clients are referred by a physician, psychiatrist, or therapist, but you may also reach out directly. Reach out to the practice to discuss fit and scheduling.

Where do I park?

The office is at 8331 North Lake Blvd., Suite C, Kings Beach — You can park on the street on North Lake Boulevard. There is also a parking lot directly behind the building, accessed from Trout Avenue (the street running parallel to North Lake Blvd, one block north). When coming to the office for the first time, watch for the green Tahoe Neurofeedback plank on the Layton Building sign on North Lake Blvd to locate the building, then turn on Bear St or Deer St to access the parking lot behind the building on Trout Ave.

What happens at the first visit?

You will talk with Dr. Finnick about your goals, relevant history, and what you hope to address. He will explain how neurofeedback works, what to expect from training, and what, if anything, a Brain Map assessment would add in your case. You will leave with a clear understanding of the proposed plan before any training begins.

Treatments

What is a Brain Map and do I need one?

A Brain Map is a quantitative EEG assessment that maps electrical activity across many sites on the scalp. Dr. Finnick uses the Brainmaster system, which produces a detailed multi-page report of metrics and statistical comparisons. It is not required for every patient — he recommends it when a detailed picture of your brain's patterns would meaningfully inform training design or support communication with your other care providers.
